Artist Statement
I studied painting with the late Frank Hewett at the University of Vermont and then earned a Master of Fine Arts degree at Johnson State College, offered in conjunction with the Vermont Studio Center. Frank once addressed a distinction between a painting and a photograph and advised me to "Never let reality stand in the way of a good painting."
As an artist, I’ve been fortunate in having the time and energy to follow the eclectic dictates of my curiosity, as opposed to a specific agenda. My paintings range widely in style, subject and include the Vermont landscape, the Costa Rican rainforest, mist-swathed mountains, images inspired by the Hubble Space Telescope, atomic blasts and last but not least, the interplay between sunlight, rock and the surface of Lake Champlain. For those of you who might like a sophisticated artistic statement… “I continue to be fascinated by the abrasion between order and chaos in the natural world, the process that creates pure visual abstraction, but which is, in fact, entirely dependent upon the physical laws of nature.” In conclusion; for those of you who might prefer a whimsical artistic statement... "Painting is nothing more than frozen music." Peter K.K. Williams |
